Dental clinics face 'harsh' X-ray rules | Bangkok Post: news

The Dental Council has complained that a looming act governing nuclear energy will hinder more than 6,000 dental clinics using X-ray machines. Council president Paisan Kangvonkit said yesterday the Nuclear Energy for Peace Act, which will be implemented on Feb 1, stipulates the owners of dental X-ray machines must have proper ownership licences. This legislation, he said, would affect more than 6,000 dental clinics and the council has expressed its concerns to Science and Technology Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj. The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), an international independent body which provides recommendations on radiation protection, says a dental X-ray machine uses 0.0095 mSv-0.0216mSv of radiation per film. The ministerial decrees should focus on the level of radiation use and the necessity of dental X-ray equipment for the benefit of the public, Mr Paisan added.
